CHARLIE

The car ride to the casino is awkwardly silent. I clench my fists and wedge them under my arms. Memories play like a movie on repeat in my head: Amelia, her eyes red and puffy, wandering the beach in front of our summer house aimlessly early in the mornings and late at night the entire summer she ended things with Max. I want to beat Max Rivers to a pulp like I did that summer. Only this time I want to hit him for different reasons. The bite of jealousy burns. I know they aren’t interested in one another personally. Hell, Maya prepared me for this, didn’t she? She warned me. But I shrugged it off. I should have known better. Maya’s always right.

Yet here I am, envious as fuck despite the fact I know Max is in love with another woman, despite the fact Maya and Annette told me Annette’s interest is purely professional. Still… I want to rip that fucker’s head off, sling Annette over my shoulder, and run off with her like some barbaric cave man.

I rein in my temper and pull my phone out of my jacket pocket. While Annette stares out the window, I pretend to scroll and read emails. I know motion sickness medication causes fatigue, but she looks more than a little worn-out. She needed a break from the office, but hanging out with a brooding CEO is probably not what she had in mind and it definitely wasn’t what I had planned. Damn Rivers. Max always makes things awkward for me. I can’t read Annette’s body language right now and my stomach is in knots. Thankfully we pull up to the portico of the Onyx.

The car door opens, and Annette slides out first. I stuff my phone back in my jacket and follow her out to find her shaking hands with the Rivers cousins’’ most trusted friend.

“Miss Marsden. I’m Brandon Montgomery, head of security.”

I step up to stand next to Annette and stick out my hand so Brandon has to release Annette’s hand. “Montgomery. Still stuck in Las Vegas, I see.”

“Charlie. It’s been a while, how the hell are you?” The man’s firm grip is as solid as ever. Solid is a great descriptor for Brandon. The guy always has a level head, always stays on the right side of the law, and is the one who bails his friends out of trouble.

I settle my hand on the small of Annette’s back and say, “Life’s good.” She doesn’t shy away from my touch, and I savor the feel of her back against my palm a little longer.

Annette’s gaze flickers between Brandon and me. “Lunch?” Is she hinting I should invite Brandon to join us? There is no way in hell I am going to give up the chance to have one-on-one time with her.

“Sounds good. I’m famished.” I place a little pressure on her back and step forward.

Brandon’s brow arches as he spies my possessive move. He steps aside and says, “I’ll take care of getting you all checked in and I’ll have your room keys delivered to your table.
